Club News January 2012
Sunday January 15th saw our minors take to the field in the O’ Loughlin Cup when they took on another town team , St Johns Volunteers. The lads made a bright start to the game but went behind to an early goal. They responded well with a superb point from play from the impressive Tommy Walsh who added another shortly afterwards from a placed ball. Walsh then had the responsibility of scoring from the penalty spot after energetic captain, Ian McDonald, was fouled in the area. He calmly obliged and put Clonard in the lead. Some great attacking football from the lads resulted in further scores including a great individual point from Dean Kehoe. The lads went in at half time leading on a scoreline of 1-5 to 1-1. The second half was a half of goals but unfortunately at the wrong end. Despite some excellent and spirited play from Clonard the Volunteer lads managed to score three crucial goals in the second half. Our lads kept fighting to the end and despite a powerful run and great point from Ciaran Kavanagh, came out on the wrong end of a 1-8 to 4-3 scoreline. Well done to all the lads on great display of football and hopefully next weekend will see a result that has long been deserved.
Pre season adult and minor training for football and hurling takes place in Whites High Performance Gym every Friday at 9.00pm and on Saturday mornings in Wexford Racecourse at 11.00am.

They will play Sean McDermotts of Birmingham in the final in Manchester on 7 November with the winners progressing to meet the Connacht champions in the All Ireland series.

Junior Football 2010
A memorable year of action has now concluded for our footballers. It was back in January that the adventure began under the stewardship of a new management team.
The intention was to secure promotion to the intermediate ranks for 2011. Thankfully after an eventful year this was duly achieved and in the best possible fashion.
Every game throughout the year was treated as must-win, and that stood us in good stead as we progressed throught to a league final. In what was a slightly farcical end to the league campaign the game was postponed at very short notice and was later awarded to us. Just rewards for an unbeaten campaign.
Attention then turned to the Championship which was of course the primary focus. Following an early set back with a first round defeat to Rathgarogue Cushinstown, we regrouped and set about making amends. The final to group games were must win and we done just that, defeating Shelmaliers thanks to a last gasp Eoin Reardon goal, and Tara Rocks with a couple of points to spare.
Up next were Oylegate in the quarter final in Taghmon and thanks to a stirring seond half performance we emerged victorious with a two point win. This game really showed the strenght of our panel and instilled a strong belief in all involved.
Semi final’s are always big occassions but this one had added significance as this year both finalists would gain promotion to Intermediate. Last year we suffered an agonising two point defeat to Monagear Boolavogue in the quarter final of the championship and they were our opponents again in this year’s semi final encounter. As had been the case on a number of occasions this year, we started the game relatively slowly but eventually found our groove. Once again a magnificent second half performance ensured victory, a place in the County Final and promotion to Intermediate for 2011.
There was marvellous celebrations in St Patrick’s Park after the semi final win as players and supporters revelled in the victory. Although promotion had been secured with this win, attention soon turned to the County Final as the players and mentors had a burning desire to end the year in style.
And so to Wexford Park and County Final day. The opponents were Davidstown Courtnacuddy and came into the game with a big reputation. There was a marvellous turn out of supporters on the day but the players remained focus on the job in hand.
As the final touches were being put to the preparations in the warm up, the heavens opened and everyone knew the team who wanted it more would win out as the conditions deteriorated. With the focus, belief and determination that was evident in the dressing room in the final moments we were in no doubt that once we performed to our abilities victory would be ours.
We started strongly, racing into a four point lead thanks to some outstanding football played in driving win and rain. As half time approached we held on to a slender lead. The second half was graced with a wonderful Shane McCormack goal which ultimately proved the difference between the sides. It was a score fit for any occassion.
After a long hard year, Clonard were Junior Football County Champions thanks to wins over Shelmaliers, Tara Rocks, Oyelgate, Monagear, and a 1-7 to 0-7 win over Davidstown in the County Final.
A truely terrific year was brought to a conclusion just a couple of weeks ago when we exited the Leinster Championship with defeat to St Monica’s of Dublin.
A magical year that will go down in the short history of our club. A League and Championship double, one competitive defeat all year and Intermediate football for 2011.
Cluain Ard Abu!!
